FDA clearance (510(k))
The FDA's permission to sell a medical device that is like one already on the market.
Most surgical robots reach US hospitals through the FDA's 510(k) process: the maker shows the device is substantially equivalent to one already legally sold, and the FDA clears it for specific uses. Each new use usually needs its own clearance.
